With VM Backup, you can send a redundant copy of your backups to Amazon S3, this is ideal for Disaster Recovery purposes.
Prerequisites:
- Ensure you are running 8.5 or later to make use of this feature. Click here to download
- You must be running the Unlimited Plus Edition in order to get access to this feature
Important Notes:
- Each VM Backup installation should make use of a different Amazon S3 Bucket
- Only Amazon S3 Standard Storage is supported
A. Set up your Amazon S3 Storage Account
-
Sign in or Sign up to your Amazon S3 account on https://s3.console.aws.amazon.com/s3/home
- Once you are logged in, go to [Services] and under the Storage section, click on [S3]. Then click [Create bucket]
- Fill in your preferred [Bucket Name], [Region] and click [Next].
Important!
- [Object Lock] found under 'Advanced Settings' must be enabled if you wish to use Immutable (WORM) backups. This will automatically enable Versioning. This must be disabled for locations that are not immutable.
- Enabling [Logging] will incur higher costs to the account, thus it is recommended to disable it
-
[Block Public Access] should obviously be enabled since it contains your backup data which should not be publicly accessible
- Next, you will need to create your Access Keys in order to be able to add your Amazon S3 account to VM Backup. Go to your account and click on [My Security Credentials]
Then click on the [Access keys (access key ID and secret access key)] section.
Click on [Create New Access Key]. Download the key pairs to your system for future use.
Click on [Show Access Key] and you will get your Access Key ID and Secret Access Key. You need to use this Access Key ID and Secret Access Key to connect to your VM Backup to the S3 bucket.

To use your Amazon S3 Account as an offsite copy location for your VMs, please proceed as follows:
- Open the VM Backup management console and go to [Setup] > [Backup Locations]

- Your new Offsite Location will appear in your Backup Locations list as below. To change the Connection String you can click the Edit (pencil) icon.
- Lastly, select the VMs you wish to assign to this rotation and Drag and Drop them from the VM list on the left into the newly created Amazon S3 location, then click [Save Changes] to complete.
-
Once done, either start an Offsite Copy manually from the [Offsite Copies] menu, or wait for your next Scheduled Offsite Copy job.
- Open the VM Backup management console and go to [Setup] > [Backup Locations]
