With VM Backup, you can send a redundant copy of your backups to a Backblaze Cloud Storage Account, this is ideal for Disaster Recovery purposes.
All backups are encrypted (256-Bit AES) natively through VM Backup.
Prerequisites:
- Ensure you are running VM Backup version 9.2 or later to make use of this feature. Click here to download
- You must be running the Unlimited Plus Edition in order to get access to this feature
Important Notes:
- Each VM Backup installation should make use of a different Backblaze Bucket
A. Set up your Backblaze Storage Account
- Sign in or Sign up to your Backblaze account on https://www.backblaze.com
- Click [Create a Bucket]
- Fill in your preferred [Bucket Name]. If you wish to use Immutable Backups, enable [Object Lock]. Lastly, click [Create a Bucket]
Important!
[Object Locking] must be enabled to use Immutable (WORM) backups. This will automatically enable Versioning. This must be disabled for locations that are not immutable
Note that if you wish to switch from non-immutable to immutable backups, you will need to create a new bucket
- If you would like to take non-immutable backups, after creating the bucket, click [Lifecycle Settings] and tick the option [Keep only the last version of the file] > [Update Bucket]
Note that the retention policy should be set directly within VM Backup. If object lock is used with backup software, setting a Default Retention Policy within the bucket can result in unpredictable data loss
- Next, you will need to create your Application Keys to be able to add your Backblaze account to VM Backup. From the left-hand pane, select [Application Keys] > [Add a New Application Key]
- Next, fill in your preferred key name. Select the relevant bucket to which you would like to allow access using this Application Key. Lastly, select [Create New Key]
B. Configure your new Backblaze Storage Account as an Offsite Backup Location
To use your Backblaze Storage Account as an offsite copy location for your VMs, please proceed as follows:
- Open the VM Backup management console and go to [Setup] > [Backup Locations]
- Click [Add Offsite Location]
- Choose the [Cloud Backup to Backblaze Cloud Storage Account] option and click [Next]
- Enter the [Key ID] and the [Application Key] generated in 'Section A' above, and lastly, the [Bucket Name] (case sensitive)
If you wish to enable Immutable Backup for Backblaze, simply enable the option:
Lastly, click [Test Connection] and once the connection is successful then click [Finish]
The Endpoint (Region) will automatically populated after doing a [Test Connection]
- Your new Offsite Location will appear in your Backup Locations list as below. To change the Connection String you can click the Edit (pencil) icon
- Lastly, select the VMs you wish to assign to this rotation and Drag and Drop them from the VM list on the left into the newly created Backblaze location, then click [Save Changes] to complete
-
Once done, either start an Offsite Copy manually from the [Offsite Copies] menu or wait for your next Scheduled Offsite Copy job
