Setting Up Domains with Special Characters

Background:

The classic Domain Name System (DNS) of the internet can by default only process English alphanumeric characters (A–Z, 0–9) and hyphens. Additionally, the period (.) is allowed as a structural element (separator).

To convert internet domain names with special characters (such as umlauts, diacritical marks, or Asian characters) into a format that can be processed by all mail servers, the Unicode text must be converted into an ACE string.

A domain that is registered in the Control Panel with special characters instead of an ACE string will result in the recipient not being identified. Emails to this domain will be rejected and the sender will receive a Non-Delivery Report (NDR).

Procedure for Entering Domains with Special Characters in the Control Panel:

For domains with special characters, the converted ACE string form (ASCII Compatible Encoding) of the domain must be entered in the Control Panel, not the spelling with special characters. The domain setup is done through the Control Panel under Settings > Domains > Add Domain.

Use a converter of your choice to convert the domain with special characters into the ACE string.
