This article explains how to create a sending address to send emails authenticated via Hornetsecurity.
A sending address is required when emails are to be sent through Hornetsecurity but a fixed relay IP address cannot be used. This is the case, for example, when emails are sent from different locations, devices, or applications, or when the customer's server uses a dynamic IP address.
Why do I need a sending address?
A sending address enables authenticated sending via the Hornetsecurity smarthost.
Instead of whitelisting the IP address of the sending system, the system authenticates itself with a sending address and a password at the Hornetsecurity smarthost.
Typical use cases include:
- Printers or scanners
- CRM or ERP systems
- Monitoring systems
- Applications with email sending
- Locations with dynamic public IP addresses
If you have your own mail server with a fixed IP address and users do not need to send from different locations, devices, or applications, a sending address is generally not necessary.
In this case, the fixed IP address can be registered as a relay server for outgoing emails.
What is a smarthost?
A smarthost is a mail server through which outgoing emails are forwarded.
The sending system does not deliver the email directly to the recipient mail server but first to the smarthost. The smarthost then takes over further delivery.
In this case, Hornetsecurity is the smarthost. The device or application logs in with the sending address at the Hornetsecurity smarthost and hands over the email to Hornetsecurity.
Hornetsecurity checks and processes the email and then delivers it to the recipient.
Prerequisites
Make sure the following prerequisites are met:
- You have the necessary global admin rights in the Control Panel.
- It is clear for which domain or environment the sending address will be used.
1. Create a secondary environment
- Log in to the Control Panel.
- Select the desired customer in the area selection.
- Navigate to Settings > Service Dashboard.
- Create a secondary environment with Hornet.email.
2. Create a user for the sending address
- Navigate to Settings > Mailboxes.
- Create a new mailbox.
- Assign the previously created secondary environment to the user.
- Save the changes.
After creating the user, wait about 30 minutes for the changes to be deployed on the Hornetsecurity servers.
Optionally, you can then log in once with the user in the webmail client to check if the access works.
Using the sending address
The newly created user can then be used for authentication at the Hornetsecurity outgoing mail server.
Use the following settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Server address | smtp.hornet.email |
| Port | 587 |
| Encryption | STARTTLS |
| Authentication | Password, normal |
| Username | Your Hornet.email address |
| Password | Your Hornet.email password |
