Due to Microsoft's deprecation of EWS in Exchange Online, 365 Total Backup has transitioned from Exchange Web Services (EWS) to Microsoft Graph to comply with Microsoft's supported APIs.
More information about the deprecation is available here.
What does this mean for 365 Total Backup?
Backup and restore functionality will continue to operate as expected. However, the move to MS Graph introduces some limitations. which are broken down here.
We are continuously working with Microsoft to identify possible workarounds.
Is any action required?
Tenants onboarded before 17 February 2026 (or have not performed a regrant since), must perform a regrant to ensure the new MS Graph permissions are applied.
Known Limitations
Due to the shifting from EWS to Graph Calls, not only used to retrieve data for backups, but also to recover it back, there are some current limitations for which Graph does not yet provide native support and for which our PDC Team is still working with Microsoft to find workarounds.
-
Group Mailboxes Restores: Restoring Group Mailboxes to ZIP or PST is currently not supported for backups taken using MS Graph from 9th September 2026 onwards. Older backup versions created before the switch to Graph remain unaffected and can still be restored to ZIP or PST.
Note that restoring to a different mailbox will continue to function for all backup versions, including new ones taken after said date
- Contacts Restores: Restored Contacts may have missing properties such as: 'Subject' & 'Honorific Prefixes'
These limitations are currently being addressed as we continue to work with Microsoft.
