The Info Mail Filter filters newsletters and other mass-sent informational emails that have not been classified as spam.
These emails are not necessarily malicious. However, they can interrupt workflows. Depending on its configuration, the Info Mail Filter holds back such emails and lists them in the individual quarantine report. Users can have the emails delivered from there if needed or add the sender to the Allow List.
Which emails are identified as info mail?
Emails that have been sent in bulk can be classified as info mail.
These include, for example:
- Newsletters
- Marketing emails
- Automated informational emails
- Other mass mailings
The sender's reputation is not the only deciding factor. Legitimate newsletters can also be classified as info mail.
Is the Info Mail Filter enabled by default?
For customers without M365 integration:
The Info Mail Filter can also classify legitimate mass mailings as info mail.
Among other things, Hornetsecurity monitors the number of simultaneous connections from a source. In rare cases, this can result in emails being incorrectly classified as info mail and moved to quarantine, depending on the configuration.
Therefore, the Info Mail Filter is not enabled by default for customers without M365 integration. It has only two actions in this case: “Move to quarantine” or “Tag”.
For customers with M365 integration:
Here, the Info Mail Filter is enabled by default. This means that emails can be classified with the Info Mail category.
However, No action (default) is selected by default. In this case, the email is only classified as Info Mail. No further action is taken.
If an action is desired, it can be selected from the dropdown menu for the respective info mail subcategories.
Possible actions are:
- No action (default)
- Quarantine
- Tag
- Move
- Delete

Allow specific senders
If info mail from specific senders should not be filtered out, you can exclude these senders from the check using an Allow List.
For more information, see the article “How do I set up allow listing for the Info Mail Filter?”.
Only tag emails as info mail
Instead of moving info mail to quarantine, these emails can also be tagged in the subject line and delivered directly to the user's mailbox.
Example of a subject line tag:
[Infomail]Users can then identify unwanted newsletters themselves based on the tag in the subject line and create their own mailbox rules.
